Clam Shell - submitted by Evelyn Urda, made by Ellen Bennett Welch, pieced in 1861. Ellen was married in 1862 to Merritt Welch. Her brother died in the Civil War 2 years later. Perhaps this was a patriotic dowery quilt, reflecting the concerns of the times.

The Ashford Oak is represented in her original design and was donated to the Ashford Senior Citizens Organization in 2000."Our First Quilt Show, "A Garden of Quilts" was held on June 9 and 10, 2001.
