emine pottery includes three primitive kilns

in the raku kiln, glazed items are fired until the glaze just begins to melt, then plunged into a barrel of sawdust; this kiln is an old electric kiln with the 'electrics' taken out - it is fired with propane

the sawdust kiln is made from cement block and is fired with sawdust; anyone can build a primitive kiln of this nature, or a pit kiln

the pit kiln is just that; a pit lined with brick and stone, filled with sawdust or other organic matter - pottery is buried in the pit surrounded with burnable material, then fired off like a charcoal grill with lighter fluid

primitive kilns like these make some of the most interesting and beautiful finishes
